Welcome to the NPCA's Get Involved portal!

The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority has partnered with local community groups, environmental agencies, and government organizations that share a common interest in helping Canada reach its goal of planting 2 Billion Trees for a better tomorrow. Together we have formed the Niagara Peninsula Tree Planting Partnership, striving to bring as many trees to the Niagara Peninsula watershed as possible, and we need your help!

Our goal today is simple. We are seeking private landowner to express their interest in tree plantings opportunities on their property to include as part of a future planting grant application and to help shape the Trees For All program. If you have land in Niagara, Haldimand, or Hamilton, we're looking for you.

The trees we plant together will capture and store carbon from the atmosphere, improve air and water quality, help to restore natural habitats and biodiversity, cool our urban centres and create and support green jobs. The benefits span generations!

Was involved in a conservation effort 23yrs ago. Lost a lot of trees with emerald ash borer damage. Would like to do some replanting, would we be eligible for tree planting program? Property is 10 acres Welland river crosses the property.

    maryanne asked 4 days ago

    Hi Maryann,

In short, absolutely!  Great to hear of your past efforts and encourage you to register your interest.  We've been hearing a lot of the damage the emerald borer has done coming through the expressions of interest that has registered.  Your property sounds like a great planting opportunity!

    Sincerely,

    Trees for All Team

Exactly WHERE are these trees being planted.

    Patch asked 4 days ago

    Hi Patch,

Trees for All is looking to plant trees on private property where landowners are interested and allow.  The express your interest/register your property tool includes mapping indicates valued tree planting opportunity areas where increased to environmental co-benefits could be realized however should an landowner be interested in planting, where on their property will remain their decision ultimately.

Our partners are also looking for opportunities on their public lands in collaboration with Trees for All as well.

As a result both private and public lands are being considered at the discretion of the landowner.

I hope this satisfies your question!

    Sincerely,

    Trees for All Team

can I plant only one or two trees on my property

    gingras7577 asked 5 days ago

    Hello,

More than likely yes.  Trees for All is looking at the full range of planting opportunities to consider how to increase tree cover and canopy across the watershed.

    Sincerely,

Is this only for private homes or as an association we have tons of space to add trees. Please advise and thanks.

    davidroush asked 5 days ago

    Hi David,

Trees for All is not restricted to private homes, private property in general is encouraged as well.  Additionally we are working with our public landowning partners to identify property as well in parallel with the private land campaign.

    Gratefully,

    Trees for All Team

    1. Are your trees native species? 2. What is the fewest number per plot? 3. Can we get trees and plant them ourselves? 4. What costs are involved?

    Janie asked 5 days ago

    Hi Janie,

Thanks for your inquiry!  Response below as numbered:

    1.  Yes, the trees offered under the program would be restricted to native species conducive to site conditions and what is available through the supply chain.  Within those caveats Trees for All will work with landowner preference and consideration as well.

    2. At present we are not limiting expressions of interest through registration in terms numbers of trees, trees per plot, or nature of planting as we are trying to appreciate the range of planting opportunities to address to inform program needs and to ensure wide participation.

    3. Depending on the nature of the planting opportunity, potentially yes.  Planting yourselves could assist Trees for All with implementation however there will be following up monitoring requirements stipulated by the potential funders which will require ongoing engagement with Trees for All.

    4. As the FAQs share, cost details are still being determined. Our goal is to make this program as cost-effective for landowners as possible and the current expression of interest and registering of land is crucial to this success. The federal program (Canada's 2 Billion Trees) will fund 50 per cent towards a gracious range of costs associated with potential plantings. The NPCA and its partners will determine how to fund the balance as part of its application to the program. There is no guarantee there may not be financial requirements by landowners, however current aspirations are to keep contributions to a minimum if not simply an exchange of land volunteered for plantings for the trees and planting services, to essentially keep program participation free and equitable.

    Sincerely,

    Trees for All Team

Does the NPCA sell native seedlings? At a funeral everyone received a white pine seedling plug - I wondered if the came from the NPCA

    Heather asked 12 days ago

    Hi Heather,

The NPCA does not sell seedlings so those would not have come from the Authority.

    Sincerely,

We have 2.3 acres along the creek in Smithville. Would we qualify for this tree planting project.

Jen TenOever asked 28 days ago

    Hi Jen,

Trees for All is registering interest for tree planting on private property at this time and are looking for a sense of all opportunities, so there are no qualifying limitations at this time.  That said planting along watercourses introduce the kind of ecological co-benefits that are a high interest.  Please register if interested to discuss further.

    Sincerely,

    Trees for All Team

Great new initiative on combating the Climate Crisis here in the Niagara. Can you tell me How and Who determined the Value Tree Planting Areas? Is there a way to receive a map of these areas? I have registered my property. Thank You!

    Annette asked 30 days ago

    Hi Annette,

    Thank you for your feedback!

The Value Tree Planting Areas are a derivative of the data from NPCA's former Nature for Niagara's Future project where the Niagara Watershed's remaining natural areas were assessed systematically towards ecological objectives to better appreciate the environmental performance of the local natural heritage system.  As the result they are the areas where there currently are no contributions to ecological objectives where they would normally be sought (i.e. riparian areas along watercourses, within proximity to woodlots and wetlands, over groundwater recharge areas).   This mapping essentially stacks up the known gaps where we currently don't have environmental contributions so there is a heat like effect to their visualization cumulatively.

It was created by NPCA for decision support within its Restoration Services to help appreciate the potential of ecological restoration opportunities and projects. Its been included in the Trees for All registration application to help landowners view the potential of their property from a perspective of where tree planting would offer greater benefits to the environment in an effort to further encourage interest in registering.

For more information please refer to the What is are ecological and cumulative benefits as described as Valued Tree Planting Areas in the Trees for All mapping tool FAQ on the Trees for All engagement portal.

At the moment this mapping/data is only available in this tool however it is being updated based on refreshed natural areas base data as part of the 2 Billion Trees Capacity Building grant award to the partnership that is behind Trees for All.  Once complete and documented properly with caveats it may eventually be made available through NPCA's GIS Open Data Portal for broader consumption, including NPCA web mapping applications with print capabilities such as the Watershed Explorer.

Thank you for inquiring about this information and drawing attention to it!

    Sincerely,

    Trees for All Team

I have about 2 acres of land I plant trees every year Generally l plant oak maple and elm These are trees that l find growing on my property I have over 300 trees already plated from 30 feet high to 4 feet high I planted elm because l think my elm trees are resistant to Dutch elm disease since the main one which many of the other one have come from is over 50 years old and at least 50 feet tall l am interested in what trees you have that l can plant

Cheryl McMaster asked about 1 month ago

    Thanks Cheryl,

Species selection will be limited to natives and largely dependent on site conditions and what's available from the nurseries at the time of developing planting plans however Trees for All will do its best to support selection of preference by landowners.

Also, it sounds like your Elm would be a great candidate for native seed collection of potential propagation!  Please mention that in the comments should you consider registering your interest!

    Sincerely,

    Trees for All Team
