Conservation Area Strategy

The Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority (NPCA) developed a Conservation Area Strategy (CA Strategy) focused on sustainable management, long-term planning, and alignment with NPCA's strategic goals, ensuring compliance with the Conservation Authorities Act.

The CA Strategy provides high-level guidance for managing NPCA conservation areas, focusing on biodiversity, climate change, invasive species, and greenspace accessibility, with specific site priorities to be outlined in future management and action plans starting in 2025.

As you read through the strategy, you will learn about programs and services and the land use classifications that will inform the general purpose for each conservation area. The CA Strategy also explores how NPCA’s conservation area system augments local or regional natural heritage features and how they connect to local public lands.

Through the CA Strategy, NPCA conservation areas were grouped into three categories:

1. Active Recreation (4)
2. Passive Recreation (16)
3. Natural Heritage & Hazard Lands (21)

The following goals will provide direction for management and long-term planning for conservation areas:

1. Protect and Restore
2. Connect and Enhance
3. Adapt and Sustain
4. Inspire and Engage

These goals align with NPCA’s Strategic Plan, focusing on biodiversity protection, public engagement, and sustainable land management.

Engagement Highlights
The CA Strategy was developed through extensive public and stakeholder engagement, gathering feedback via in-person and online stakeholder meetings, a Public Information Centre, a survey, and additional engagement tools through this portal. Community participation was key to the success of NPCA’s Conservation Area Strategy and we thank everyone who participated in this important process.

Land Inventory

NPCA's Land Inventory identifies every parcel of land that NPCA owns and includes some basic information for each parcel, such as location, acquisition date, method, and land use category, among others.

The Land Inventory will be reviewed and updated from time to time and is an internal document that is not available online.

The CA Strategy is a requirement of Ontario Regulation 686/21 and was to be completed by December 31, 2024.
